Newsed ][ v1.0 Beta QuickDocs
by Ariel Benzakein
No long docs are needed for a program this short, so I wrote this one
to get you started with the program. First off I'd like to thank Casey
Whiteley for registering the old version of NewsEd... I haven't seen a check
for it in a LONG time. That's what prompted me to write this new and much
more powerful and configurable version.
To get Newsed up and running, type NEWSED at the DOS prompt. Make sure
that all of the files included in the ZIP are in the same directory. Now,
go to option 2 of the main menu, Configuration. Here is what the different
values mean:
1 - First Character:
This is the first character of the "header" line. In the original NewsEd
program, the header consisted of "*" and "/" characters. Now, you can make
it whatever you want. The final product will be a line of these characters
combined (i.e. "*/*/*/*/*/*", etc).
2 - First Character Color:
Now you can configure the colors that Newsed uses. This is the color for the
first character of the header. The different colors are listed at the bottom
of the screen, directly above the prompt. Choose the number before the color
for this value (so blue would be 1, red would be 4, etc).
3 - Second Character:
This is the second character of the header, and it is combined with the first
character to create a line of text displayed before each news item.
4 - Second Character Color:
This is the color of the second character of the header.
5 - Subject String:
This is the string for the subject of the news file. When you create a new
news file, you will be prompted for the subject. This string is displayed
to the user with one space after it, then the subject. So say that the
subject string is "Subject:". The user enters "New Modem!" for the subject
when he creates a new news file. The total string would come out to
"Subject: New Modem!" at the top of the news file.
6 - Subject String Color:
This is the color of the subject STRING that you set for #5.
7 - Subject Color:
This is the color of the actual subject that you will input when you create a
new news file. This way, the subject can be a different color from the subject
string. So "Subject:" could be green and "New Modem!" could be yellow, for
example.
8 - Date String Color:
This is the color of the string that says "Date : " in the beginning of the
news article.
9 - Date Color:
This is the color of the date, which will come after "Date : " in the beginning
of the news article.
10 - Text Color:
This is the color of the actual news text.
11 - ANSI News File
This is the full path and file name of the ANSI news file your BBS reads. Make
sure the path exists! If the file doesn't exist, that's OK, because Newsed
will create a new file for you when you go to add the first article.
12 - ASCII News File
This is the same as the ANSI news file, except that color codes won't be sent
to the file. Even if your BBS doesn't use this file, Newsed must create one.
Now that you know how to set up Newsed, it's time to create a news file.
Instead of using the crude editor that came with the first version of NewsEd,
I decided to let you use your text editor. Simply create a text file with
any editor (TheDraw (only if saved in ASCII format), Edwin, Qedit, and others
will all work fine). Next, run Newsed and select option 3 from the menu to
create a news file. Enter the full path and file name of the text file you
created with the news article in it. Next, enter the subject for the news
article.
Newsed will update your news file at lightning speed. You may think it
couldn't have possibly updated both files in the time it takes, but go check,
and to your amazement (and mine the first time I ran it!) both news files
will be updated!
That's all you need to know. If you'd like a registered copy of Newsed
and would like more info about some of my current and planned programs, send
